Gabriela Cruz joined the Department of Musicology as assistant professor in 2012. She received her MM (musicology) from The University of Texas at Austin in 1992, a MFA (musicology) from Princeton University in 1994, and a Ph.D. (musicology) in 1999, also from Princeton. She has taught previously at Tufts University, the New University of Lisbon, Portugal, and at the University of Coimbra, Portugal. Cruz is a specialist in 19th century music and opera, with a growing record of international publications and a strong scholarly presence in both conference and professional organizations. She is currently completing a book on the technological culture of opera in Paris in the 19th century, and is also engaged in a collective project that she is directing on musical comedy in Portuguese-speaking theaters in 19th-century Lisbon, Oporto and Rio de Janeiro. Cruz’s research extends into Spanish, Portuguese, and Latin American music as well as into performance studies and sound technology.
