Research interests concern design, fabrication and performance of materials and structures. Emphasis is placed on fundamental understanding of performance-limiting mechanisms, through combined experimental, modeling and simulation studies. Topics of current interest include: fiber-reinforced ceramic composites for gas turbine engines; novel structural concepts for protection against high intensity blast and ballistic threats; advanced cooling concepts for hypersonic space vehicles; and nanomechanics of biological materials.
