Dr. Mayo received her AS degree from De Anza College, BSN degree from California State University, Dominguez Hills, a Master and Doctoral Degree in Nursing Science from University of San Diego, and completed a Post Doctoral Fellowship in Nursing Gerontology at the University of California, San Francisco. Dr. Mayo has over 20 years of teaching experience. She has extensive health care organizational experience as a clinical nurse specialist and as a nursing researcher. Areas of interest include gerontological nursing, functional status of persons with cognitive impairment, patient decision-making, and instrument psychometrics.
Dr. Mayo teaches in the clinical nurse specialist and PhD programs. She is active locally and nationally in professional service and has received several awards for nursing research. In addition, Dr. Mayo serves on the Glenner Memory Care Centers medical advisory board in San Diego and chairs the Interagency Collaborative on Nursing Statistics (ICONS) at the national level. Currently, Dr. Mayo’s funded program of research includes examining decision-making among older adults with cognitive impairment and judgment and problem solving among persons with dementia, as well as nursing leadership competency instrumentation.
