Dr. Topp complete his BSN at the University of Toledo and his MSN from the University of Cincinnati, then graduated from The Ohio State University with a PhD in Exercise Science and Health Education. He then completed a 2-year post-doctorial experience in Geriatric Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. During the past 25 years Dr. Topp has been the principal or co-investigator on over $3 million of extramurally supported research projects which has resulted in over 110 publications in peer reviewed journals and 300 presentations at professional scientific meetings. The content of these studies has examined the effect of various modes of exercise on the functioning and health of older adults. Dr .Topp has also studied the effect of various interventions to treat childhood and adult obesity involving motivational interviewing and community participatory methodologies. Dr. Topp has served as a temporary and regular member of the Nursing Study Section and other study sections within the National Institutes of Health since 1997. His expertise in the areas of research methodology and statistics is sought by numerous professional nursing organizations including Sigma Theta Tau International Inc., The Council for the Advancement of Nursing Science and the Midwest Nursing Research Society in reviewing proposals for funding and abstracts for presentation. Finally, Dr. Topp has a consistent history of mentoring students and junior faculty in obtaining intra and extramural awards and facilitating completion of their projects through to publication and presentation.
