The Renewable Energy major is a broad-based interdisciplinary program addressing the social, economic, and technical issues that graduates will encounter in the emerging field of renewable energy and green careers. According to a study by the Brookings Institute (2011), green (or "clean") careers occur in the "sector of the economy that produces goods and services with an environmental benefit." The clean economy employs approximately 2.7 million workers across a diverse group of industries in the United States. Of these jobs, the "clean technology" segment was a top performer in job production and far outpaced the economy as a whole during the recession years of 2008 and 2009. Further, the clean economy is manufacturing intensive, which plays into a major strength of the Renewable Energy curriculum.
