Welcome to the Department of Philosophy at Illinois State University. One of the questions prospective students ask is, "Why study philosophy?" Here are three good reasons: Philosophy provides students with the opportunity to critically examine some of the most profound, important, and exciting questions that there are, for example, questions about the nature of existence, about our knowledge of the world around us, about how we should lead our lives. Philosophy gives students the chance to think carefully about pressing social and political issues, for example, our responsibility to the environment, to other living creatures, to future generations. Philosophy helps develop superior critical thinking and communication skills, skills that are of use to many fields and future careers. The Department of Philosophy offers a Philosophy Major, a Philosophy Minor, and a Religious Studies Minor. We offer a wide range of interesting and challenging courses for both philosophy students and for those fulfilling general education requirements. Our faculty offers expertise in a variety of philosophical areas and the department has a strong reputation for the quality of its research and teaching.
