Biochemistry is the study of the structure, composition, and chemical reactions of substances in living systems. The biochemistry bachelor of science degree program prepares students for a wide range of careers in the field of biochemistry and other disciplines where technical expertise is needed. Numerous graduates of the biochemistry BS program pursue further graduate study in biochemistry, chemistry, or engineering. Biochemistry students study general, organic, physical, analytical, and inorganic chemistry, and biology, microbiology, and genetics. The department offers numerous research opportunities and close mentorship throughout the program. Laboratory facilities in the Beeghly Building include modern teaching and research laboratories including specialized laboratories for research in biochemistry. Biochemistry students are involved in a variety of research projects using the facilities of the department or at many world-renowned research labs in the Washington, D.C. area through an internship, independent study, or a cooperative education work-study program. Students have recently conducted research at the National Institutes of Health, Food and Drug Administration, and the National Institute of Standards and Technology, amongst many others.
