Welcome to the Department of Biology at Georgetown University! Our renowned faculty have diverse research interests spanning molecular, developmental, cell, ecological and evolutionary biology. Interdisciplinary by nature, we are housed amongst members of the Chemistry and Physics department in Regents Hall, a wonderful new science facility that opened in 2012. Laboratory design promotes plenty of interactions while numerous study spaces support innovative and collaborative education. This, combined with our strong ties with the research active Georgetown Medical School, the NIH and other universities in the DC area provide an exceptional environment for learning and scholarship. Members of the Biology department are committed to undergraduate and graduate education and research. Our students learn fundamentals in life science, gain skills in communication and obtain knowledge of experimental design and critical analyses of data that will benefit them throughout their lives. We have worked to create a strong sense of collegiality between students and their professors at the undergraduate and graduate level. We are excited to welcome Professors Leslie Ries and Cynthia Anderson as faculty members and Dr. Dan Isaac as an Academic and Administrative Professional to the department. Professor Ries explores large-scale distribution patterns of insects, mostly butterflies. Her research is largely based on data coming from citizen science monitoring groups. She works closely with those groups to help them manage and share their data online. Professor Anderson will be a valuable member of our Foundations of Biology I team of instructors and the coordinator of our RISE and Teach program. Dr. Isaac will work closely with our graduate students to enhance their doctoral training and will be a member of the Genetics and Biochemistry teaching teams. We have focused our strengths in 3 main research areas, developmental neurobiology, microbial biology and environmental biology. Research in Biology is supported by grants from federal agencies including the National Institutes of Health, National Science Foundation, U.S. Department of Homeland Security Science & Technology Directorate, as well as by private foundations including the Multiple Sclerosis Society and Howard Hughes Medical Institute.
