专业描述

The Baccalaureate Social Work Program at UMBC is part of the University of Maryland’s School of Social Work. The School offers a continuum of social work degree programs – – baccalaureate, masters, and doctorate. The masters and baccalaureate programs are fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education, a nationally recognized organization founded to promote and improve quality of education in social work. The UMBC program is responsible for preparing the baccalaureate level professional in generalist practice. The focus of study is on generalist practice with individuals, families, groups, and communities. Students learn a range of skills and helping techniques that will enable them to intervene effectively in addressing social problems. The MSW and PhD graduate degree programs are available on the University’s Baltimore campus (UMB),15 minutes from the UMBC campus. The linkages between the campuses and programs offer advantages to students planning to study at UMBC: Added faculty expertise for teaching and participation in research. The opportunity for advanced standing admission into the MSW program of the School. Research and teaching centers involving faculty and students from across the continuum. The University’s Center on Teaching and Research in Social Work is based in the Department at UMBC. The Program makes maximum use of the opportunities for enrichment of social work education provided by UMBC – creative instruction, involvement of undergraduates in research and community service, a full range of liberal arts programs, and a technologically advanced campus. An array of opportunities to supplement the BSW degree are offered ranging from Africana Studies to Visual Arts. A tradition of close faculty-student collaboration in the study of a variety of social work issues such as health care, addictions, service provision to families and children, and welfare reform. Preparation of students for 21st Century social work practice, including course work in the application of information technology to practice.
