Entering my 2nd year as Department Head, I join with my colleagues in welcoming you to one of the top-ranked mathematics departments in the U.S.— a world center in Pure and Applied Mathematics. Our department currently appoints approximately 50 faculty, 45 postdoctoral instructors, and 20 visitors, specialized across a range of fields in geometry and topology, algebra, probability theory, combinatorics, physical applied mathematics, computational sciences, theoretical computer science and computational biology. I invite you to explore our web site, where you will find the latest news, upcoming events, listings of weekly seminars, etc. It features sections on our programs for Undergraduates, and outreach programs to mentor High School students, from a variety of backgrounds. Other headings offer logistical information for prospective or incoming members. You can read back issues of our newsletter, Integral. Mathematics has always been at the core of MIT, and the Mathematics Department strives to be a world leading center for research and teaching. All undergraduates take math classes and interact with the department’s faculty, instructors and graduate students. MIT undergraduates make up the highest number of participants and top scorers of any institution in the annual Putnam Mathematical Competition. The mathematics major is pursued by many as a first or second major, to enhance their future in whatever they undertake. Being a part of MIT provides opportunities for members to contribute to the national discussion—advocate for competitive global funding in research, and address the many challenges in science education. Since 2011, MIT has hosted the Advantage Testing Foundation’s Math Prize for Girls, for middle and high school students competing from across the nation. Locally, our members mentor at the local Girls’ Angle Math Club, for students in the 5th-12th grades.
