专业描述

Oklahoma State University’s Department of Sociology addresses some of the most pressing social, environmental, economic, educational and family issues facing our world today. These issues range from the human aspects of climate change and disaster relief, to health disparities among U.S. subpopulations, the micro-processes of how people develop trust and acquire knowledge, and changes in political economies and criminal justice systems worldwide. With a strong commitment to sociological research and practice, the department’s outstanding faculty members have a long tradition of teaching and mentoring excellent students at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Our undergraduate students have a wide range of career opportunities. Sociology offers B.A. and B.S. degrees in general sociology, applied sociology, or sociology with an anthropology emphasis. Students are encouraged to take advantage of the program’s opportunities for supplementing coursework with internships and faculty-guided research. The applied sociology option further enables students to prepare for careers in areas including criminal justice, the human dimensions of environmental sustainability, and social and community services. Due in part to Oklahoma's rich Native American culture, OSU Sociology students may also tailor their studies to focus on anthropology—the study of human cultures across human history. Many students also tailor their studies to fulfill pre-med or pre-law requirements because the strong foundation Sociology provides for these professional degrees. OSU Sociology has helped to launch graduates with the B.A. /B.S. into careers including public administration, law enforcement, public health education, youth advocate outreach, epidemiology, census research, social work, forensic science, and community organizing. The B.A and B.S. degrees also provide a superb foundation for pursuing a professional or graduate degree in sociology, or in related fields of study. OSU Sociology graduate students engage alongside faculty in a range of research focusing on pressing issues of global and national importance. With a solid grounding in social theory, research methods, and public engagement, our graduate students are thoroughly prepared to conduct research in multiple substantive areas. The graduate program offers M.S. and Ph.D. degrees with concentrations in environmental sociology, social movements, deviance & criminology, social inequality and social psychology. Our graduates work in academia, public administration, social services, the private sector, and not-for-profit agencies. We offer a wide range of substantive Sociology graduate courses for students seeking Masters and PhDs. For more information, just select the “Academics” link above.
