Excellence in Social Sciences Higher Education The Department of Social Sciences at Michigan Tech offers graduate and undergraduate degree programs aligned with our faculty’s interdisciplinary knowledge and expertise: PhD, MS in Environmental and Energy Policy PhD, MS in Industrial Heritage and Archaeology BA in History BS in Social Sciences BS in Anthropology At the graduate level, the program in environmental and energy policy focuses on environmental policy analysis and the socioeconomic dimensions of environmental issues; and the program in industrial heritage and archaeology emphasizes the history, archaeology, and material culture of industry and industrial communities. Our department has multiple degree pathways to choose from, within a broad range of the social sciences, designed to suit students' individual interests and professional goals. In addition, we offer minors in American studies, environmental studies, historical studies, international studies, law and society, and social and behavioral studies. Renowned Faculty Faculty members represent an array of fields in the social sciences, including anthropology, archaeology, geography, history, sustainability science, sociology, political science, and science and technology studies. Our primary research interests are linked to our graduate programs. Our research is enriched by the cultural and natural resources that surround the campus, which is located near the shores of Lake Superior in Michigan’s historic Keweenaw Peninsula. We are active scholars, possessing national and international reputations as leaders in our fields, and have received substantial funding for our scholarship, as well as numerous awards for our publications and research. Our faculty members are committed to mentoring and working closely with students, emphasizing the development of critical thinking and problem solving skills as part of broader disciplinary and interdisciplinary proficiencies. We pride ourselves on providing students with the opportunity to engage in hands-on educational experiences through participation in faculty-led research projects and apply academic concepts, strategies, and techniques to contemporary, real-world issues.
