Anne Curzan's primary research areas include history of the English language, language and gender, historical sociolinguistics, lexicography, composition and rhetoric, and pedagogy. She has received the university's Henry Russel Award (2007), an Arthur F. Thurnau Professorship for undergraduate teaching, and a Faculty Recognition Award (2009). Curzan regularly teaches history of English, introduction to English linguistics, and language and gender, as well as the graduate pedagogy course. She currently serves as director of the English Department Writing Program and codirector of the Joint PhD Program in English and Education. From 2002-2011, she was co-editor of the Journal of English Linguistics. She served on the faculty of the University of Washington from 1998-2002. Curzan works with universities around the country on how to better prepare graduate students for teaching and is coauthor of the book First Day to Final Grade: A Graduate Student’s Guide to Teaching. Curzan has also published the books Gender Shifts in the History of English and How English Works: A Linguistic Introduction (with Michael Adams). She received her PhD from the University of Michigan.
