Dr. Berhane has literally traveled across the globe in pursuit of knowledge. After completing his undergraduate studies at Addis Ababa University, Ethiopia, majoring in statistics, he completed an M.Sc. degree in statistics (University of Guelph, Canada), a Ph.D. degree in biostatistics (University of Toronto, Canada), and a postdoctoral fellowship at Johns Hopkins University (Baltimore, MD). He is currently a Professor in the Division of Biostatistics. His main research interests are in the development of statistical methods for environmental research, and their application to examination of effects of (i) air pollution on children's respiratory and cardiovascular health, and (ii) the built environment on development of childhood obesity.
