Lynn Book’s 25 year history of interdisciplinary artistic practice cuts across boundaries between performance art, theater, dance, visual art, language and new music forms, to create original, hybrid, transmedia projects that have received citations, fellowships, and awards from among others, the National Endowment for the Arts, Illinois Arts Council, Franklin Furnace, and the Mary Duke Biddle Foundation. In 2010, Book launched a large scale performance project in New York City at Symphony Space in collaboration with an opera company, an early music orchestra, a video artist and a contemporary music composer, called “Divining Opera”, to receive its full premier in 2012. Also in 2010, she will be a featured artist at an international contemporary arts festival in Slovenia, where she will produce “SongSpot”, a new performance installation project. Book has collaborated and/or worked on diverse projects with director Valeria Vasilevski, vocal artist and filmmaker Elise Kermani, co-producing a CD of adventurous women composers, architect and writer Madeline Gins, Viennese composer Katharina Klement who participated in the development of “RE:garding Next”, a collaborative culture project, 2007, Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art, experimental filmmaker Sharon Couzin whose film Bouquet featured Book and premiered at the Museum of Modern Art, and theater artist Ping Chong in Angels of Swedenborg as principal performer. Research interests include: Creativity – principles and practice, broad spectrum perspectives, translational approaches and methods, public engagement New Art Forms – transdisciplinary practices, new music and sound art, digital media and live interface, performance art Voice – experimental and ‘world’ vocal musics and theater forms – both traditional and contemporary, extended voice and new composition techniques Body – cognitive and somatic operations, theory and practice of ‘voiced body’, real/virtual issues Lynn is Senior Lecturer in the department and also serves as Associate Director of Creativity for the Program in Entrepreneurship and Liberal Arts. She is also on the faculty of Transart Institute, an MFA program in new media, Berlin/New York. Lynn teaches “Performance Art”, “Special Topics” and “Border Crossings”, a First Year Seminar course for the Department of Theatre and Dance, as well as “Foundations in Creativity and Innovation” and “Arts Entrepreneurship” for the minor in Entrepreneurship and Social Enterprise. She also develops programs and events for the Program in Entrepreneurship and Liberal Arts.
