In accordance with the 6th Role Delineation Study/Practical Analysis, students in athletic training at Illinois State develop knowledge and skills in the prevention, recognition, treatment, and rehabilitation of athletic injuries. As professionals working closely with physicians, athletic trainers also act as a liaison between the patient and the physician (see Standards of Professional Practice). Preparing Medical Professionals Recognized by the American Medical Association as allied health care professionals, athletic trainers work in various settings including high schools, colleges and universities, professional sport venues, sports medicine clinics, corporations and industrial settings, health clubs, and nontraditional settings. In addition, Illinois State's program meets the academic requirements necessary to become licensed as an athletic trainer in the State of Illinois once board certification is achieved. To earn a degree in athletic training, students are required to complete all major courses and 1,200 hours of supervised clinical experience divided over five semesters plus a comprehensive summer internship prior to taking the Board of Certification (BOC) Examination.
