Dr. Broadbear is a Professor of Health Education and has been at Illinois State University since 1996. He has taught several courses including health behavior, needs assessment, program planning and evaluation, health education strategies, and the general education course Dynamics of U.S. Contemporary Health Issues. In addition to teaching he coordinates the community health education internship program. Dr. Broadbear’s research and scholarly work focuses on health promotion program development and evaluation. Projects he has completed or in progress include development and dissemination of the Life Smart for Women program for the Illinois Department of Public Health, evaluation of blood pressure screening procedures in the Illinois WISEWOMAN Program, designing learning experiences for adolescents and young adults on the ethics of intimate relationships, examining the role of wellness coaching in improving health and well-being, training health promotion professionals to deliver Reducing the Risk, and working with school and community health professionals to enhance physical activity and nutrition in school-age children. Additionally, he has conducted research on the development of critical thinking dispositions among health sciences undergraduate students. Prior to ISU he was an Associate Instructor in the Department of Applied Health Science while in graduate school at Indiana University. He served as Director of Wellness at St. Anthony’s Hospital in St. Petersburg, FL for five years and as exercise physiologist at Lee Memorial Hospital in Ft. Myers, FL. At St. Anthony’s he was department head of the Wellness Centers that included adult fitness, cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation, health promotion programs, and Pregnagym – a special program for expecting and post-partum women. At Lee Memorial he worked with adult fitness clients and cardiopulmonary rehabilitation patients by assessing their physical activity needs, designing and monitoring tailored exercise and lifestyle modification programs, and teaching health promotion classes.
