Christopher Ograin is a Lecturer with Potential Security of Employment with a joint position in the Department of Education and Department of Mathematics. After graduating from the University of California, Los Angeles with a B.S. in mathematics and M.Ed. degree, he returned to the high school he attended, Damien High School in La Verne, California and taught calculus and pre-calculus there for ten years. He eventually enrolled in graduate school at the University of California, Irvine, where he earned a Ph.D. in mathematics. His research at UCI focused on mathematical modeling and computational mathematics, but he also taught a variety of different undergraduate math classes and participated in outreach programs for high school students during his time there. His role in the Gevirtz School is with CalTeach/The Science and Mathematics Initiative, a University of California system-wide program dedicated to improving the quality and quantity of science and math teachers in California. As lecturer, he teaches CalTeach courses in math teaching methods for undergraduates interested in pursuing careers as secondary math educators. He also teaches courses for the Single Subject Credential candidates in the Teacher Education Program. In the Department of Mathematics, he teaches primarily a sequence of upper division content courses for undergraduates pursuing the Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics with Concentration in High School Teaching. The dual nature of the position allows him to reach and make connections for a broad range of students, mathematicians and educators. Professor Ograin is also the Director of the UCSB Mathematics Project, a local site of the California Mathematics Project. This professional development program for K-12 mathematics teachers works to improve student learning outcomes by helping educators develop engaging teaching practices linked to the Common Core State Standards in Mathematics.
