I am Professor of English and Co-director of the Editorial Institute. My research interests have centered on Milton, A. E. Housman, and Philip Larkin, as evidenced by my major publications: Milton’s Style: The Shorter Poems, Paradise Regained, and Samson Agonistes (1981); The Poems of A. E. Housman (Oxford English Texts edition, 1997); The Letters of A. E. Housman (2 vols., 2007) the introduction to A Variorum Commentary on The Poems of John Milton, vol. 3, Samson Agonistes (2009); Philip Larkin: The Complete Poems (2012). These scholarly editions have involved original archive research with manuscripts and rare books, and all have a comprehensive commentary or set of notes. I believe in the value of scholarly editions as the foundation of what we do in the humanities. I am currently preparing a collected edition (so far, text only) of the prose of T. S. Eliot in 5 or 6 volumes. In addition to teaching courses like The History of the Book in the Editorial Institute, I teach British Literature I and II: my sense of the value of historical survey courses derives from the courses I did as an undergraduate at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland. In the summer, I usually teach EN 596 A Linguistic approach to Literature, which derives from my interest in stylistic study.
