Stirling's campus is regularly described as one of the most beautiful in the world, set in a 300-acre estate, which boasts its own loch and the Robert Adam-designed Airthrey Castle. The city of Stirling, two miles away, is also pretty, with a castle and historic old town. There are outstanding facilities for sport – as you would expect from Scotland's university for sporting excellence – and a vibrant arts centre on campus. The university has 12,300 students and around 23% of them are from overseas, with more than 100 nationalities represented. Stirling was the first university in the UK to introduce the semester system and is proud of the flexibility of its degrees. With no faculty boundaries, students can choose from one of the widest variety of subject combinations. Accommodation All new first-year undergraduate students are prioritised for a place in university accommodation, provided they apply by the advertised deadline date. This priority extends to one offer of accommodation per student. Weekly prices range from £90 for a room with shared bathroom facilities to £155 for a studio flat. All rooms are offered on a self-catered basis. Facilities Stirling's state-of-the-art library has had an £11.4m refurbishment. There are 950 computers in computer labs, libraries and elsewhere (many 24 hours), plus connection points throughout campus and wireless networks. The MacRobert Arts Centre is based at the heart of the campus with a lively programme of cinema, drama, dance, comedy and music. There are extensive indoor and outdoor sports facilities, including a tennis centre and gym, a 50m swimming pool, a nine-hole golf course, driving range and golf academy, and a publicly accessible art collection. The students union offers more than 80 student societies and sports clubs, volunteering opportunities as well as student activism and representation. It runs an advice and support centre, and a range of award-winning bars and venues are provided on campus. Transport Stirling is well connected to the UK road and rail networks, and is only 45 minutes from both Edinburgh and Glasgow.
