Professor Butner joined UCSB in 1981. He has industrial experience in computer design and operating systems software design/development at General Electric, Honeywell, GTE, and Bell-Northern Research. His research interests today include both general- and special-purpose computer architectures for high-performance and/or high-reliability applications, very large-scale integrated circuit structures and their influence on computer design, and interconnection networks for parallel and distributed computer systems. Dr. Butner and his research group have designed, simulated, built, tested, and reported on a wide variety of experimental computer projects. A sampling of these projects includes a custom robotics processor; a real-time electronic rotate, zoom, warp, picture-in-picture video manipulator supporting low-latency high-quality camera/image processing for laparascopic and/or endoscopic surgical applications; a general-purpose scalable multi-threaded multi-computer; as well as a 4-by-4-port 40 gigabits per second per port ATM switching system. These projects have often included significant custom VLSI chip sets to implement critical subsystems, e.g. a many-to-many full asynchronous circuit-switched interconnection network as in the multi-computer project or a CORDIC-based trigonometric function computing chip for a robotics application.
