Originally from Taiwan, Dr. Tiffany Chang is an exceedingly versatile conductor emerging in the greater Boston area. She was named the 2014 Third Prize winner for The American Prize in both Conducting and Orchestral Performance (college/university orchestra division). She received her Doctor of Musical Arts degree in orchestral conducting from Boston University and previously earned several degrees from Oberlin Conservatory, including a Master of Music Education, two Bachelor of Music degrees in cello performance and music education, and two minors in composition and music theory. Dr. Chang is the founder and conductor of the New England Repertory Orchestra (NERO) and serves as Music Director/Conductor for the North End Music and Performing Arts Center’s Opera Project. She has conducted the Richmond Symphony and Symphony Chorus (VA), Bohuslav Martinu Philharmonic (Zlin, Czech Republic), Astoria Symphony (NYC), Boston Youth Symphony Orchestra, Greater Boston Asian American Youth Symphony Orchestra, Dana Hall School of Music Summer Symphony, ALEA III, and Xanthos Ensemble. She served as Assistant Conductor for Boston University Tanglewood Institute’s Young Artists Orchestra, Opera Institute, and the All-Campus Orchestra. While at Oberlin, she was the Music Director of the Oberlin College Symphony and Assistant Conductor for the Northern Ohio Youth Orchestras. Dr. Chang currently holds the position of Assistant Professor at the Berklee College of Music where she teaches conducting. She additionally is the conductor of the Chamber Orchestra at Boston University, where she had previously taught undergraduate courses in conducting and ear training. Dr. Chang studied orchestral conducting with David Hoose, Bridget-Michaele Reischl, and Amy Chang; her other notable mentors include Gustav Meier, JoAnn Falletta, Ann Howard Jones, Robert Spano, Gunther Schuller, Kirk Trevor, Larry Rachleff, and Donald Schleicher. Dr. Chang’s musicianship and entrepreneurial spirit earned her the 2013 Kahn Career Entry Award, Pi Kappa Lambda Prize for Musicianship, Theodore Presser Scholarship, Ernest Hatch Wilkins Memorial Prize, Boston University Conducting Award, and Oberlin Conservatory Dean’s Merit Scholarship. She remains a member of the Conductors Guild, Oberlin Chapter of Pi Kappa Lambda, and National Scholars Honor Society.
While at Oberlin, she was the Music Director of the Oberlin College Symphony and Assistant Conductor for the Northern Ohio Youth Orchestras.
