Michael Zaretsky, viola, member of Boston Symphony Orchestra, graduate of Moscow State Conservatory, cum laude. Former member of Moscow Philharmonic String Quartet; Moscow Radio and Television Symphony Orchestra; Principal Viola, Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra; soloist, Radio Israel. Brought to Tanglewood Music Center by Leonard Bernstein in 1973 and successfully auditioned for the Boston Symphony as a TMC student during that summer. Active as a soloist and chamber music performer in the United States and abroad, Professor Zaretsky has released on the ARTONA label highly acclaimed recordings of viola and piano music and solo viola repertoire, including J. S. Bach Six Cello Suites. Film composer and conductor John Williams wrote and dedicated his Duo Concertante for violin and viola to Mr. Zaretsky. He has also performed Williams’s Concerto for Viola and Orchestra. Former faculty member of Wellesley College, Boston Conservatory, and Longy School of Music, Professor Zaretsky has been a Boston University faculty member for more than 30 years. Many of his students have successful professional careers.
