Elaine Vaan Hogue is a director, actor, and teacher. Elaine’s teaching focus is a physical approach to acting, directing, and devising new work. She is co-artistic director and founder of The Gypsy Mamas, a laboratory sustaining adventurous creative exploration and fostering interdisciplinary collaboration in the creation of new work. Past projects include Creation: Mythic Weavings (Women on Top Festival and Magdalena USA) and When Jennie Goes Marching (Olney Theater Center and Spontaneous Celebrations). Elaine is a passionate and active member of The Magdalena Project, a dynamic international cross-cultural network of women’s theatre and performance, facilitating critical discussion, support, and training. The branches of The Magdalena Project extend over international borders and across generations. Elaine has performed, directed, and taught in diverse settings across the country. Regional work in the Boston area includes The Amish Project, Imagining Madoff, and The Kite Runner (New Repertory Theater); A Disappearing Number (URT @ Central Square Theater); Metamorphosis (BCAP); Walking the Volcano (BCAP/BPT); Crave (Nora Theater Company); Infinity’s House (Majestic Theater); and Fen (New Theater). She has directed many plays at BU—favorites include The Penelopiad, Execution of Justice, The Other Shore, and Angels in America. A recent venture has been into the realm of cyber-performance collaborating in All The Better To See You With (Transit Festival @ Odin Teatret); MagFest KISS (Amsterdam); and trans-hack-feminist UpStage Jam (Eclectic Tech Carnival).
