A scholar with equal expertise in ethnomusicology and music education, Dr. Claire Jones has been teaching for the BU online graduate program in music education since 2008. Dr. Jones is the author of Making Music: Musical Instruments in Zimbabwe Past and Present, the primary resource book used in Zimbabwean music teacher training programs. She has published articles in the academic journals Ethnomusicology Forum and Yearbook for Traditional Music and contributed to the Concise Garland Encyclopedia of World Music (Vol. I, New York, Routledge). She maintains an active membership in the Society for Ethnomusicology, and served on the Advisory Council for the Society from 2007 to 2009. Dr. Jones earned her Ethnomusicology Doctorate and Master of Education degrees from the University of Washington (Seattle), and a Bachelor of Science degree from Cornell University. A specialist in the music of Zimbabwe, she teaches private lessons and workshops on Shona mbira and marimba and is an accomplished performer; she has led the Seattle group Mahonyera Mbira Ensemble since 1991. As a founding member of Kutamba Marimba Ensemble, Dr. Jones collaborated with City Cantabile Choir director Fred West to create the first marimba and choir arrangement of the Congolese mass Missa Luba. Dr. Jones holds an adjunct professor appointment with the Kent State University Music in Music Education graduate online program, and has previously taught courses for the University of Washington, Music Works Northwest and the Zimbabwe College of Music in Harare. A consultant with the Ethnic Heritage Council in Seattle, her research interests include International Music Education, African Studies, Gender and Music, Nationalism and Post-Colonial Studies, and Music and Spirit Possession.
